The government has taken up tight security measures in the city to maintain law and order during New Year's Eve and celebration of the Gregorian New Year, officials said.
Security measures will also be stepped up in other parts of the country, particularly in the divisional cities and district headquarters.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Narcotics Department will keep close surveillance on troublemakers in the city, so that the people could celebrate the occasion peacefully.
More than 5,000 law enforcers will be deployed in the capital including the diplomatic zone and the posh areas of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Dhanmondi, Uttara as well as on the Dhaka University campus to stop rowdy celebration on the eve by abusing alcohol, honking cars or playing high-beat loud music.
Of the law enforcers to be deployed, 2,000 will be from RAB, and the rest will commprise police and narcotics officials who will keep strict vigil on the city.
A high DMP official said 3,000 police personnel would be deployed in the megacity to check anarchic activities and to maintain the city's law and order. "The task (special arrangements) will begin from this midnight (December 30)," he said.
