Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 32 tortoises of rare species at Benapole town under Sarsa in Jessore on Wednesday. Commander Subedar Farid Uddin of Putkhali camp of BGB-23 said they had secret information that some tortoises smuggled from India were being taken to Benapole town through Putkhali border. A BGB patrol team raided the border point and recovered 32 tortoises contained in a bag belonging to some people. The smugglers, however, managed to flee the scene while the bags were being searched. The tortoises will be handed over to Navaran forest office, said a BGB source, according to UNB.
