Monday, 10 March 2014

A court in Sylhet has sent 32 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami to jail in two separate cases over violence turning down their bail petition. Senior judicial magistrate Abdul Quader passed the order of sending them to jail as the accused appeared before the court on Sunday afternoon. On April 23, 2012, three BNP activists were killed in a clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, a component of the then 18-party alliance, and police in Bishwanath upazila of Syleht during a hartal called by the local unit of BNP demanding the return of its missing leader M Ilias Ali. On July 22, 2012, police submitted charge sheet against 317 activists of BNP and Jamaat in a case filed over the clash. Another case was filed in connection with a clash during a daylong hartal enforced by Jamaat on March 20, 2013. Jamaat leader Golam Rabbani was shot dead during the clash in Biswanath upazila, according to UNB.
