COX'S BAZAR, Nov 14 (UNB): A gigantic poa fish, known as Panna croaker in English, was sold for Tk one million (10 lakh) at Shafique Centre fish depot in Teknaf on Saturday.
Mohammad Ishak, a fish trader from Nuniachari Fishery Ghat area in Cox's Bazar, bought the fish weighing 32.2 kg.
It was caught by fishermen of a trawler on Saturday morning, he said.
Mohammad Ishak said he bought the fish for its air bladder, weighing 697 grams, which he will export to Hong Kong.
He said in Hong Kong these air bladders are sold on a grade basis.
"Last year I bought another black poa fish weighing 37.8 Kg at Tk 8 lakh from Saint Martin's Island," said Ishak.
"The scientific name of the fish is Protonibea Diacanthus," said Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Principal Scientific Officer of Marine Fisheries and Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Cox's Bazar .
Its air bladder generally has three uses- for making surgical yarn, for manufacturing vitamin E capsule, and in some countries it is used as an ingredient in an expensive soup, Dr Shafiqur said.
