33rd death anniversary of Zia observed

Friday, 30 May 2014

The 33rd death anniversary of late President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was observed across the country Friday through various programmes, according to a news agency.
BNP leaders and workers, led by party chairperson Khaleda Zia, placed wreaths and offered fateha at Zia’s mazar in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 11am.
Later, Khaleda attended a milad mahfil arranged by Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal on the premises of Zia’s mazar.
The BNP chairperson distributed cooked food among the destitute in various parts of the capital under a three-day destitute feeding programme taken by Dhaka city unit BNP.
Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP association, also provided free medical treatment and medicine in front of the party’s central office marking the day.
In the evening, a doa mahfil was held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office, seeking salvation of Zia’s departed soul.
Different units of the party and its associate bodies also observed the day across the country with due respect amid various programmes.
BNP and its front organisations earlier chalked out a 14-day programme from May 27 to observe the death anniversary of Zia in a befitting manner.
