34 missing as 2 boats capsize in Munshiganj

At least thirty-four people have gone missing two trawlers (large, motor-propelled boat) with 59 aboard capsized in Padma River at Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj amid inclement weather. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Munshiganj district on Saturday evening said, two cargo trawlers carrying 58 people sank in the Padma River on this (Saturday) afternoon. DC Saiful Hasan said the two sand-laden trawlers were also ferrying passengers when they met the accident. The trawlers sank due to strong current in the river at Kumarbhog while heading towards a brick-kiln in Pagla in Narayanganj district from Madonkhali of Faridpur district around 3:15pm. Later, 26 people were rescued either by local people or passing boats while 34 other went missing following the incident. Being informed, fire service and civil defence teams rushed to the spot and were conducting search to trace the missing people, according to a news agency.
