365 were on board MV Miraj-4 when it sank

Saturday, 17 May 2014

‘MV Miraj-4’ was carrying at least 365 people on board, almost double of its capacity, when it capsized in the Meghna River in Gazaria of Munshiganj on Thursday, according to a log recovered from the launch on Saturday. A group of curious people recovered the tally book from the staff room (Kerani Cabin) of the launch around 5pm. After the launch was brought to the shore by rescue vessels, many curious people peeped inside in hope of finding more bodies. The ‘tally-book’, of which UNB has a digitised copy, shows that 351 passengers and 14 staff members were on the Sureshwar-bound launch on Thursday. Gazaria upazila nirbahi officer ATM Mahbubul Karim told the news agency that a group of people, led by Dhaka University teacher Moshahida Sultana Ritu, submitted the log to him around 6pm.
