A 37-member central executive committee of Upazila Parishad Association of Bangladesh (UzPAB) was formed at its council 2011 held Tuesday in the city with Foyzur Rahman Fakir, chairman of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila Parishad as President and Ataur Rahman Ata, chairman of Manikganj Sadar Upazila Parishad as Secretary General.
About 100 upazila chairmen and vice-chairmen from all seven divisions of the country gathered in the capital to attend the council and hold elections.
The main objective of one unified association of upazila parishads is to create a common platform to realize their demands and make the upazila parishad an effective local government unit.
"There were multiple problems of our elected upazila parishad, second most important local government tier. Through this committee they will be able to exercise their rights collectively from one common platform," said Zarina Khan, local government expert and Deputy Chief of Party of Strengthening Democratic Local Governance (SDLG) project funded by USAID during the council meeting.
