3800 kg Hilsa seized in raid

CHITTAGONG, Oct 7: The Coastguard and Fisheries Department in a joint raid today seized 3800 kilograms of Hilsa fish from different areas in the Bay of Bengal.
The fishes were seized from Sandwip, Hatiya, Sonagazi, Moheshkhali and Sangu river for netting Hilsa fish in violation of government restrictions for 11 days from October 6 as it is the high time for mother Hilsa to of release eggs.
The authorities also fined four fishing boats Tk 15000 each as they could not show license for fishing in the Bay.
The government earlier imposed restrictions on netting, storing and selling of Hilsa fish from October 6 to 16.
Fisheries Department inspector Zahirul Huq said 3300 kg Hilsa fish have been sold on auction in presence of a magistrate while the rest 500 kg fish was distributed among the inmates of four orphanages in the city.
