FE REPORT | Monday, 21 September 2020
At least 396 people were killed in extrajudicial acts and 1,429 women and children were raped in the country in 2019, according to report of a rights group.
Also, 42 Bangladeshis were killed in the hands of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) last year, it said.
The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) revealed the figures in its annual report titled 'Human Rights Situation Analysis Report' prepared on the basis of data collected from the national dailies
and the fact-finding reports submitted by its representatives.
The HRSS report shows that the overall human rights condition in 2019 was as dismal as it was in 2018.
"Security forces continue to enjoy impunity in cases of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests. Violence against women, in particular, gang rape and child rape are on the rise. Consequently, the state has not been able to ensure peace, justice and security to its citizens," the HRSS said in its report released on Sunday.
Of the 396 people who died in extrajudicial killings, 357 were killed in the name of 'crossfire/gunfights', 16 tortured to death, one was shot to death and 22 others died in the custody, the report said.
The deaths occurred during raids and operations conducted by the law enforcement agencies.
On the other hand, a total of 23 persons fell victim to 'enforced disappearance', it said.
Of the rape victims, 834 were children under 16 and 595 were adult females, the report said.
And 195 women were gang-raped and 58 of them were killed later, it added.
Besides, some 150 women were killed in domestic violence in 2019, said the report. Of them, 54 women were killed and two females committed suicide over dowry-related violence.
A total of 241 girls and women reportedly faced sexual harassment and 27 females were injured in acid violence between January and December 2019, the report added.
"It is also alarming that in a total of 112 violent incidents against children, 56 lost their lives and 157 were critically injured," it said.
During the one-year period, a journalist was killed and 51 were injured while some 33 were threatened, 17 arrested and seven were assaulted, according to the report. Under the digital security act 2018, 45 people were arrested and 49 cases filed, it said.
The HRSS also observed that 30 incidents of attacks on the minorities tool place in 2019, in which 11 people were injured, 38 temples were vandalised and four people fell victim to land grabbing.
The report also said that at least 49 people were killed and 2,863 injured in political violence, while some 73 people were lynched.
Bangladeshi citizens have also become victims of border killings, torture, and other forms of inhumane treatments, it said.
Some 42 Bangladeshi citizens were killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and two others were killed by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) in a total of 78 incidents, according to the report.
On the other hand, 930 people were injured, 83 were bullet-hit and 23 people were tortured by law enforcement agencies, it said.
