FE report
A change in the country's broadband services, including in mobiles, is likely as the telecoms watchdog has taken plans to issue 3G licences by March 2009, the chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission stated last week. He said the licences would be awarded through an open auction.
The decision came following a call from GSMA, the global trade body representing the mobile industry, to issue 3G licences to enable the operators make broadband services more widely available in the country.
According to sources, licensing the 2100 MHz spectrum band for 3G services would facilitate the country's operators to launch mobile broadband services, which the customers can use to get fast and easy access to the Internet and online services. With the launch, the mobile phone users would get easy access to any information on health, education, job opportunities and agriculture.
The analysts think that it would facilitate a faster growth of the mobile sector. The number of mobile users reached almost 43.5 million end October from 200,000 in 2001. The number of subscribers could top 70 million by 2011.
