3m tonnes of food grains to be distributed
FE Report | Tuesday, 10 June 2008
The government has planned to distribute 3.0 million tonnes of food grains under its various existing programmes for the fiscal year 2008-09, finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam said Monday in his budget speech.
The programmes include Open Market Sales (OMS) at a concessional price, Food for Work, Vulnerable Group Feeding, Vulnerable Group Development, Test Relief and Gratuitous Relief, he mentioned.
Taking the distribution target into account, it has also a plan to procure a total of 3.2 million tonnes of food grains in the next fiscal though internal procurement and import, and also receiving food aid.
"By the end of FY 2008-09, the government will still have a stock of 1.0 million tonnes of food grains, which will enable us to tackle any food security related risks," said the adviser.
He further said the government has taken necessary steps to keep the price and supply of essential food items like rice, wheat, edible oil, lentils, onion and garlic at a normal level at all times and especially during the month of Ramadan.
