CHITTAGONG, Jun 16: Construction work of the third Karnaphuli Bridge involving Tk 3.35 billion is likely to be completed before stipulated period as 45 per cent work of the project is over, concerned sources said.

Construction of the sub-structure installation of pillars over the river Karnaphuli, which is the main task of the bridge, has already been completed and the task of construction of super-structure is now underway.

It took a period of 22 months for constructing the sub-structure.

Although the time-limit for execution of construction work of the Karnaphuli Bridge is 38 months, the project director is optimistic about completion of the remaining work before the stipulated time.

The task of conducting feasibility study of the Karnaphuli Bridge concluded in 2001 and the then alliance government approved the project. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid in 2004.

As the controversy gained ground centring on whether there should be pillar bridge or a hanging bridge, two years more were wasted.
