CHITTAGONG, Sep 24 : China Major Bridge Engineering Company, assigned with the task of constructing the Third Karnaphuli Bridge, expressed optimism to finish its construction within 30 months instead of 38 months, the time limit set earlier.
Around 35 per cent work of the bridge has been finished. Piling work of two pillars on northern bank of the bridge has already been completed. On visiting the site, it was witnessed that the construction work of the bridge is going on in full swing.
Meanwhile, an alternative steel-structured bridge has been built at the bridge site on the river Karnaphuli for constructing the main bridge easily and promptly. Pillars of the original bridge will be constructed with the help of the alternative bridge.
The Third Karnaphuli Bridge would be well equipped with the latest technology. It would contain four separate lanes for the movement of the vehicles according to their speed categories.
The project of constructing the bridge was chalked out in 2000, and its feasibility study was conducted in 2001. Later, the foundation stone of the bridge was laid on April 19, 2003.
