At least five people, including four BGB men, were injured in a gunfight between the border guards and a gang of smugglers at Moulvipara at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district on Friday night. The injured Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were identified as Khorshed Alam, Nurul Islam, Mohamamd Abdul Majid and Mintu Das. Acting on secret information that a consignment of Yaba tablets was coming from Myanmar through Naf River at Teknaf, a team of BGB 42- battalion, led by its commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Abujar Al Jahid, went to the spot around 10:00pm. When a boat with armed smugglers anchored in the area, the BGB team challenged it. Sensing danger, the smugglers opened fire on border guards prompting the BGB men to fire back, triggering a gunfight. A chase and counter-chase took place during the hour-long gun battle. Four BGB men sustained injuries, some of them seriously. The injured were rushed to the Upazila Health Complex. One of the gangsters was also injured in the gunfight. BGB arrested Mohamamd Ismail, 42, an alleged smuggler, from the spot, according to UNB.
