Friday, 16 April 2010

FE Report
At least 40 people were injured when police charged batons on protesting workers of an apparel unit who have been demanding resignation of some of its senior officials at Ashulia Industrial Belt Thursday.
Witnesses said nearly 7,000 workers of Nasa Basic Garment Factory took to the streets at about 8:30am demanding resignation of the managing director, production director and the supervisor as they did not pay heed to their demands.
The demands included stopping sexual harassment against their female colleagues, fixing minimum salary for each worker at Tk 5,000 and re-instatement of the workers who were sacked earlier by the management.
As the factory authorities rejected their demand in the morning, the workers started ransacking the apparel unit at Narasinghapur.
The angry workers also beat up several officials including the executive director and managing director during the violence, said OC of Ashulia police station.
The protestors alleged that some top officials of the apparel unit recently have physically harassed their female colleagues. "We want an workplace which will be very much friendly," they said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and shot water canons and charged batons to disperse the violent protesters who allegedly ransacked the factory by blockading the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.
