40 killed in road mishaps during Eid holidays

At least 40 people were killed in separate road accidents across the country during the Eid holidays, reports UNB.
Five unidentified motorcycle riders were killed in a tragic road accident in Shakpala area of the Bogra town Thursday midnight.
Witnesses said a Rangpur-bound bus from Dhaka hit two motorbikes from the opposite direction, leaving four riders dead on the spot and one critically injured.
In Manikganj, an unidentified motorcyclist died on the spot as a Paturia-bound minibus from Dhaka rammed his bike near Jagir Bridge in Sadar upazila on Dhaka-Aricha highway Friday morning.
Witnesses said the accident occurred when he was passing the highway in the area at around 11 am. On information, the police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In Pabna, five people, including two of a family, were killed and 25 others injured as a bus overturned at Baoikhola in Atghoria upazila Thursday morning.
The deceased were identified as bus supervisor Shafiqul (45) of Vangura upazila, Aloka Rani Sarkar (39), wife of Suvash Chandra Sarkar, and Nirmola Reviriu (22) of Chatmohor upazila, Nargis (35), wife of Abdul Aziz, and her daughter Anita, (17) of Chittagong district.
Witnesses said the accident occurred when an Ishwardi-bound bus from Vangura overturned and rammed against a roadside tree as its driver lost control over steering, instantly killing three passengers and injuring 25 at 7:00am.
In Kishoreganj, four people were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pick-up van at Asmita in Katiadi upazila Thursday morning.
The deceased were identified as pick-up van driver Shahabuddin (18), three pick-up van passengers -- Jalal (12), a JSC examinee, Jyotsna (26), and an unidentified woman aged about 25. All belonged to Katiadi.
Witnesses said a speeding bus collided with a pick-up van coming from the opposite direction at Asmita on Dhaka-Kishoreganj highway, killing Jalal on the spot and injuring 23 others at 11am.
Later, the pick-up van driver and two other passengers died at Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bajitpur after admission.
Of the other injured, 13 were admitted to Zahirul Islam Medical College Hospital, two to Katiadi Sadar Hospital and five to a local health complex.
Local people put up road barricade on the highway and damaged two passing vehicles to protest the accident.
In Gazipur, an unidentified passer-by, aged about 32, was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus at a by-pass road in Kaliganj upazila at around 8:00am Thursday.
One person was killed and nine others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a pick-up van at Asmita in Katiadi upazila in Kishoreganj district Thursday morning.
Eight of the injured were admitted to Katiadi Sadar Health Complex.
Local people put up road barricade and damaged two passing vehicles in protest against the accident. The police cleared the blockade two hours after the mishap.
In Sherpur, at least two people, including a minor, were killed and 10 others injured in a bus accident at Mathuradi village on Sherpur-Sribardi Road in Sribardi upazila early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Shah Ali (35), son of Taleb Ali of Bhayadanga village of same upazila, and Mim Akhter (4), daughter of Anwar Hossain of same village.
The police said a Bhayadanga-bound bus from the capital skidded off road and fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost control over steering, instantly killing two passengers and injuring 10 others at 3:24am.
On the Eid day four people were killed and another man was injured as two motorcycles collided at Baro Mile in Kaharol upazila in Dinajpur district.
Local sources said four riders died on the spot and another man was injured in the accident that took place at about 7pm.
In Comilla, five people died and 15 others were injured as a bus and another microbus collided at Kalakochua in Burichong upazila Wednesday, the day of Eid-ul-Azha.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Local sources said a Laxmipur-bound microbus from the capital and another Daudkandi bound bus of Papiya Paribahan from Comilla collided on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, leaving five micro passengers dead on the spot at about 5:30pm.

In Narsingdi, a man was killed and 10 others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a leguna at Tripulia bus stand in Shibpur upazila at around 4:30 pm.
In Munshiganj, a minor boy died on the spot when a Louhajong-bound tempo from Maowa hit him at Kumarbhog in Louhojong upazila at 2:30pm.
In Barisal, two people died on the spot and two others were injured as a Barisal-bound bus rammed into a Patuakhali-bound motorbike at Nandapara in Bakerganj upazila at 11 am.
In Bogra, a woman was killed and her husband injured as a coach ran over them at Puran Bogra on Bogra-Rangpur Highway in Sadar upazila at around 9 am.
A bus crashed into a tempo on Tangail-Narshingdi Road in Gazipur district Tuesday morning leaving three people killed, the police said.
