41.5-kg gold seized at Shahjalal

Customs officials have seized 41.5 kilograms of gold worth about Tk 200 million in separate drives in Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) International Airport in Dhaka's Kurmitola. Four people have been arrested for their alleged involvement with the gold smuggling. Customs Intelligence Assistant Director Umme Nahida Akhter confirmed the report. The detainees are Shafir, Mohammad Ali, Iqbal Ahmed and Amirul. In a drive, the officials seized 270 gold bars weighing 10 tolas each and six gold chains from Sharif and Mohammad Ali, Joint-Commissioner of Airport Customs Zia Uddin Ahmed said. In another drive, the Customs officials seized 50 gold bars weighing 5.83-kg worth about Tk 29.1m from Iqbal’s luggage. In separate drive, the Customs officials arrested Aminul with 4.3- kg gold. ‘A total of 41.5-kg gold worth about Tk 200m were recovered in the last 24 hours ending at 6:00am on Monday,’ the official said. Separate cases were lodged with the Airport Police Station in these connections, according to BSS.
