43kg gold seized at Shahjalal

Customs Intelligence officials on Wednesday seized another big consignment of gold brought to Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport by an unidentified passenger of a foreign airlines apparently with the motive to smuggle to precious metal to India via Bangladesh. The Customs officials recovered 43 kg gold, worth Tk 210.5 million, from the freight unit of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport early in the morning. The 43 gold bars, each weighing one kg, were kept hidden in a garment accessories parcel sent from Singapore in a Singapore Airlines flight that landed at the airport around 9:00pm on Tuesday, said Mainul Khan, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID). He said the gold consignment has been brought here undercover of garments accessories for a garment manufacturer company situated in Chittagong EPZ. The gold was recovered around 4:00am on Wednesday from the airport freight unit after an overnight search, according to a news agency.
