46 die in crashes during 4-day Eid vacation

At least 46 people were killed and many more injured in road accidents across the country during four days of Eid holidays on Monday-Thursday. Of them, eight were killed on Monday while 22 on Tuesday, the Eid day, nine on Wednesday and seven people died on Thursday. A police sergeant along with his wife and son was killed when their car crashed into the railing of a bridge on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Batisha in Chouddagram upazila in Comilla district on Thursday. The dead are Nazrul Islam, 52, a sergeant of Brahmanbaria District Police, his wife Lovely, 35, and their minor daughter Nuzhat, 3. They were returning to Brahmanbaria from their village home at Chhagalnaiya in Feni after a three-day Eid holiday. In seperate accident in Daudkandi upazila of the district, two people were killed and 30 others injured in a collision between two buses at Bhitpur in the afternoon. In Munshiganj, a motorcyclist was killed and his two co-riders were injured as a pick-up crashed into their bike near Katakhali Bazar at Munshiganj Sadar Upazila in the afternoon. In Kushtia, a bus helper was killed when his vehicle crashed into a motorcycle in Bittipara Bazar area on Kushtia-Jhenidah highway in Sadar upazila in the afternoon. Police and witnesses said the bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting the motorbike, leaving 15 people injured. The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where Yusuf died. On Wednesday, nine people were killed in separate road accidents in Sylhet, Sirajganj and Thakurgaon districts. In Sylhet, four people were killed as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Atirbari in Dakkhin Surma Upazila. In Sirajganj district, three people were killed and 11 others injured in two road accidents. Locals said a Sirajganj-bound battery-driven auto-rickshaw from Belkuchi collided head-on with a bus of ‘Ritu Enterprise’ on Bangabandhu (Jamuna) Bridge West Link Road at Sayedabad around 12 noon. Two passengers of the three-wheeler died on the spot while five others were injured. In another accident, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided with a Nasimon (battery-driven human hauler) on Bogra-Nagarbari road in Koira Bazar area of Ullapara upazila, leaving Siddique dead on the spot and six people injured. In Thakurgaon, two people were killed and 29 others injured in a road accident at Comillahari on Thakurgaon-Dhaka highway on Wednesday. Highway police said a Thakurgaon-bound bus from Dhaka hit a pick-up in the area around 4:30am, leaving Hamidul dead on the spot and 30 people injured. Later, another died at the hospital. On Tuesday, at least 22 people were killed and many more injured in separate road accidents in Noakhali, Narayanganj, Bhola, Chittagong, Faridpur and Magura districts. In Noakhali, seven people, including three members of a family, were killed and 30 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Sonaimuri-Chatkhil road in Jayag Bazar area of Sonaimuri upazila in the early hours. In Narayanganj, four people were killed as a private car went down a ditch on Dhaka-Narayanganj link road at Jalkuri in Siddhirganj upazila in the early hours of Tuesday. In Bhola, three people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus crashed into a roadside tree at Kortarhat Bazar at Lalmohan upazila on Tuesday morning. In Chittagong, two motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their bike at Shitalpur in Sitakunda upazila in the afternoon. In Faridpur, five people were killed in two accidents in Bhanga upazila. Four occupants of a microbus were killed as the vehicle fell into a roadside ditch at Chumukdia on Dhaka-Barisal highway around 12:30pm. In another accident, an unidentified man was killed at Maligram around 10am. In Magura, a man, identified by police as ‘Sohel’, was killed in a road accident at Sadar upazila on Tuesday night. On Monday, a least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Habiganj, Mymensingh, Munshiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts, according to UNB.
