5 Bangladeshis die in Hajj stampede, 15 injured

At least five Bangladeshi Hajj pilgrims were killed in Saudi Arabia’s Mina Hajj stampede on Thursday, Bangladesh Hajj Mission in Mecca confirmed confirmed on Friday. It said 15 Bangladesh nationals were injured in the stampede occurring during ‘stoning of the devil’ ritual of the Holy Hajj in Mina Mountain outside the Saudi pilgrimage city of Mecca on Thursday afternoon. The dead are Firoza Khanam, wife of Khandker Sirajul Islam, from Jamalpur town’s Hatchandra Mollabarhi, Julia Huda, wife of Mukul Huda, from Sunamganj town’s Hajiparha, Md Noor Nabi, alias Mintu, from Sonagazi Upazila in Feni district, and his sister Tahera Begum and Jahanara Arzu of Munshiganj district. When contacted, their families in Sunamganj, Jamalpur and Feni also confirmed that they died in one of the worst tragedies in Holy Hajj. They said at least two dozen other Bangladeshis were injured in the fatal incident. Two million people, including more than 0.1 million Bangladeshis are performed Holy Hajj in Mecca this year.
