5 BNP, Jamaat leaders sent to jail in cop murder case

 RAJSHAHI, Mar 3 (BSS): A court in Rajshahi passed an order today to send five BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders to prison in the police constable Siddhartha murder case.
Metropolitan Session Judge Shamsul Alam rejected the bail petition of the defendants after hearing both the sides.
The leaders are: Advocate Shaheen Shawkat, Tofazzal Hossain Tapu, Anwar Hossain Uzzal and Jaminur Rahman of BNP and Dr Zahangir Hossain of Jamaat.
Earlier on February 26, another court sent 36 BNP leaders and activists including Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation Mosaddique Hossain Bulbul and party's Joint Secretary General Mizanur Rahman Minu to prison.
According to the sources concerned, they were charged in two cases over the killing of a policeman last year.
The accused appeared in court when the one-month interim bail granted to them by the High Court (HC) came to an end.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Constable Siddhartha Sarker was wounded in a bomb attack in the city on December 26 last year. He later succumbed the same day.
Following the incident, police filed two cases against 85 persons including, Mayor Bulbul, BNP's Rajshahi unit chief Nadim Mostofa, metropolitan unit General Secretary Shafiqul Haq Milon, Jamaat-e-Islami's metropolitan unit Secretary General Emazuddin Mondol, Assistant Secretary ASM Mamun Shahin, Mainul Islam and Mahbub Hasan Bulbul.
The defendants got a one-month interim bail on January 20.
The HC had ordered them to surrender to the magistrate's court and seek bail once their interim bail ends.
