5 held for looting 340 sacks of basmati rice

Police in a drive on Thursday night arrested five people, including an insurance company official, from different parts of Jessore district for their suspected link to looting of 340 sacks of rice of basmati variety worth Tk1.10 million. Police said Alhaj Mansur Ahmed, a rice trader of Chapainawabganj, had sent a consignment of 340 sacks of basmati rice in a truck to an establishment in Shantala of Jessore on September 5. When the truck reached Barinagar in Jessore Sadar upazila, a group of people picked up the rice into another truck and drove away to an unknown direction. Later, owner of the rice filed a complaint with the police. Following the complaint, police conducted a drive in different parts of Jessore and arrested five people, including Abu Jafar, an official of Federal Insurance Company. Sub-inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station Ali Akbar confirmed the incident saying 19 sacks of rice out of 340 were recovered from Daherpara, according to a news agency.
