5 jailed for violating woman in Jhalakati

JHALAKATI, May 11 (UNB): A tribunal Monday sentenced five people to five years imprisonment each for trying to violate a woman. The convicts are Manik Khan, Jahid Hossain alias Shaju, M Wahid, Tiger Monir and Tutul Gazi of Rajapur Upazila headquarters. Monir and Tutul were tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, the convicts intercepted a housewife of the upazila in Balaibari area at about 7pm on April, 2008 while she was returning home after attending a marriage ceremony. At one stage they tried to violate her. When the victim raised hue and cry the culprits fled the scene. Later, the victim filed a case against them with the police. After examining the witnesses and records Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Siddiqul Arefin Choudhury pronounced the verdict in the crowded courtroom.
