5 killed in road accident at Sitakund

CHITTAGONG, Dec 31: Five persons have died, three of them crushed under the wheels of a passenger bus, and 36 others injured in a road accident at Sitakund of the district on Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Saturday morning.
The incident took place as driver of the Chittagong bound bus from Chandpur lost control and ran over four standing workers on the footpath before falling into the roadside ditch at Sultana Mandir area on the highway at around 6.30 am.
The deceased are Sumita Rani Dey (32), Uttam Biswas (30), Namita Majumder (47), Jharna Das (40) and Monir Hossain. Monir and Jharna succumbed at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital within hours of admission while the three others died on the spot.
Monir hailed from Shariatpur but the hospital police could not give his details. Sumita, Uttam, Namita and Jharna were from Masajidda village of Sitakund and workers of Baro Aolia Mars Textile Mills in the area. The mill workers were waiting on the footpath for a transport to attend their duty at the mill.
Local people and two teams from the nearby fire stations at Kumira and Sitakund sent the injured to the hospitals. Some passengers of the bus were admitted to Sitakund Upazila Health Complex and released after first aid while 12 others are under treatment at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Condition of two of them is critical, hospital sources said.
Highway police seized the bus (Chatta Metro BA- 05-0028) but the driver managed to escape.
