50 hurt in post-poll violence

BAGERHAT, Apr 17 (UNB) : At least 50 people, including 2 policemen, were injured in post-poll violence in Borobaria bazar area of Chitalmari Upazila Saturday night. Local sources said supporters of defeated union parishad chairman candidate Momtaj Ali Khosru beat up two supporters of winning candidate Sheikh Wahiduzzaman Panna, when they were going to Gopalganj district from Chitolmari by a bus Saturday evening. Later, both the groups engaged in clashes, leaving 50 people from both sides injured including two policemen. The injured cops were identified as Zahidul Islam and Thandu Mia. A passenger bus and two shops were also damaged during the clash. Wahiduzzaman Panna, upazila Jubo League unit vice president, was elected UP chairman in the election held in the upazila on March 31. Of the injured, 23 were admitted to Chitalmari and Tungipara hospitals. Police arrested Jahangir Hossain, supporter of defeated chairman candidate ruling party activist Momtaz Ali, in this connection. A case was filed.
