50mw more power from Ashuganj plant soon

BRAHMANBARIA, Apr 23: At least 50-mw power will be added to the national grid by the end of April through the new power plant project in Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited (APSCL). Production of the new power plant, set up by APSCL through self finance, has been begun experimentally since Monday last. As a result, APSCL's production capacity has gone up to 778-mw now. Office sources said, authority of APSCL expended Tk 3.06 billion for implementing the new gas engine power plant. Authority completed all activities of the new plant by international tender notice. A Spanish farm TSK group started the work through a contract since September 9, 2010 and successfully completed their work within 210 days. The Spanish company will deliver the warranty service up to next one and half years. Australian G E Zen Baker supplied all engines of the new plant and Germany supplied the rest of the equipment. High profile engineers from Spain, Austria and Bangladesh worked on it. Sources of Ashuganj Power Station Company informed, there are 16 units at the new project. Each unit produces 3.332-mw power and the whole new project produces 53.312-mw power in total. 50-mw of new production will be added the national grid and additional 3.312-mw will be used for the domestic activities. Md Nurul Alam, Managing Director of Ashuganj Power Station company ltd told the financial express, "power of new project can meet the three districts' electricity needs. "We have started production experimentally through the new project. End of the April month, we functionally will add the 50-mw power to the national grid, he said. APSCL, the country's second biggest power station, is an enterprise of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). The government transformed it to a company in 2003, and appointed a managing director, two directors and other officials for better management. Now APSCL is producing only 400-mw to 415-mw of electricity, whereas the production capacity of its eight units is 728-mw. With this addition, the company's total power production will stand at 450-mw to 465-mw per day. The Local mill owners urged the concerned authority to take necessary steps to run all the units of Ashuganj Power Station Company properly to ensure regular power supply.
