5.0pc cash stimulus demanded to boost inward remittance

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 30 May 2023

Cash incentive should be increased to 5.0 per cent for inward remittance from Bangladeshi migrant workers staying in different job destination countries.
Besides, they should be brought under a universal pension scheme.
To this effect, Ovibashi Karmi Unnayan Programme (OKUP), a grass-roots migrant organisation, on Monday demanded necessary allocation in the next budget.
The government currently provides 2.5-per cent cash incentive to encourage remittance by official channels.
The OKUP also demanded allocation for brining the socially and financially distressed returnees, especially women, under the social safety-net scheme.
It highlighted the important role migrant workers play in the growth of the national economy.
The government should provide financial security to migrant workers through a universal pension scheme, the OKUP said, seeking allocation of required funds in the budget to this effect.
It accentuated the need for decentralising services at the offices under the expatriates' welfare and overseas employment ministry.
Migrant workers must be protected by ensuring adequate manpower and financial allocation at the labour wings located in the destination countries.
Socio-economic reintegration of migrant returnees, especially female workers, is crucial, the OKUP cited.
