'50pc children at risk of physical impairment'

Friday, 10 April 2009

Country's half of the total children between zero to two years of age is at risk of physical impairments-35 per cent living in rural areas and 15 per cent in urban areas, reports BSS.
Child health experts in an international conference in the city Thursday attributed this problem to lack of proper education of mothers in rearing up their children, who ultimately suffer from various disabilities in course of their growth.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr AFM Ruhal Huq inaugurated the conference on "Towards a Better Understanding of Disabilities of Children with Disabilities" at a city hotel Thursday.
The Minister said the country has now 10 per cent children with disabilities. "This issue should not be undermined as the children with impairment and disabilities deserve to get all types of facilities like others in society," he added.
Presenting a keynote paper on 'Poverty, Childhood and Development' in the conference, Prof of Child Neurology and Development in Bangladesh Institute of Child Health Dr Naila Zaman Khan said physical impairment of a child could turn into any form of disabilities if mothers are not properly aware of maternal education.
