548 people killed in May: BHRC

The current month of May saw at least 17 murders on average every day as 548 people were killed across the country during the period, said a Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC) report.
The report prepared based on newspaper reports and internal surveys conducted by BHRC’s branches at pourasava, upazila and district levels, the rights body termed the growing incidents of killing as the deterioration in law and order situation.
Voicing grave concern over such ‘widespread’ killings, BHRC underscored the need for the law enforcing agencies and government bodies concerned to be more responsible to bring down the killing trend to a zero level in the interest of establishing the rule of law.
Among the deaths, the report said, a total of 291 people were killed in road accidents, 99 in social violence and 48 in family violence while 37 mysterious incidents, 22 in secret incidents and 13 after abduction.
One of the victims was journalist, said the report adding that three people were killed by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) while seven committed suicide.
Apart from the killings, 16 women were raped and one fell victim to torture for dowry, the report added, according to UNB.
