Although the government is working hard to achieve the MDGs by ensuring food security in the country, a large segment of people still suffers from food crisis in the Monga-affected areas for lack of adequate job opportunity, reports UNB.
A recent survey disclosed the scenario although Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque at a function recently said, "There is no Monga or semi-famine condition in country's northwestern region."
According to the survey report, some 55.6 per cent of the people suffer from food crisis for six to eight months in the region.
The number of families who took food less than two times a day during the Monga season has increased sharply from 24 per cent in 2007 to 47 per cent in 2010.
On an average the family incomes total Tk 2542 per month in seven months when there is work and Tk 1230 per month during the rest of the year with individual daily purchasing income capacity of the family being Tk 20 and Tk 9.70 for male and female respectively, the survey report said.
ActionAid Bangladesh, a non-government organisation, recently conducted the survey, Panel Survey-1 2010, initiated by Monga-Mukta Bangladesh (MMB) Prochar Obhijan Daptar (Secretariat) as part of a single international campaign of ActionAid to end hunger as a political priority.
