JOYPURHAT, Apr 28: The six agri-markets in Joypurhat district constructed with more than Tk 25 million are lying unused for a long time. The markets had been made for root-level agri-growers so that they are able to sell their products at fair prices. Avoiding the toll and others complication farmers could make right choice to sell their product in time. But left unused for a long time, those buildings are reportedly cracking up. Locals claimed that for wrong selection of location, the agri growers cannot get facilities from those market. Local traders have rented 2 markets but they are making use of those for their own trading and not giving to farmers. Asian Development Bank had financed for those markets with about Tk 25.597 million. Local Government Engineering Department implemented the project. Huge facilities for farmers were provided in those markets including different packing house, grading, sorting, washing and drying units, loading-unloading area, storage goodown, ladies corner, market management committee office and training centre, etc. Farmers would have the facility to preserve their crops when they wished to sell. But after construction of those markets, the selling and buying of green crops have been closed fully. Visiting those markets physically and talking to the farmers and locals this correspondent found that as the markets were not located in right place, transportation cost would have been high so the farmers were not interested to move to markets with their products. Ex local UP Chairman Anwaruzzaman Talukdar said that if the markets had been constructed at big bazar Itakhola in the upazila instead of Fuldighi, the farmers would have been benefited.
