6-day Independence Day celebrations take off

RANGPUR, Mar 24 (BSS): The six-day celebration of the great Independence and National Day-2011 through elaborate programmes continued from March 22 at Begum Rokeya University (BRU) with huge enthusiasm in the town.
The programmes include photo exhibition and screening of documentary films on the War of Liberation, genocide and atrocities committed against humanity by the war criminals in 1971, staging dramas, Gano Sangeet, daily discussions and cultural functions.
Vice Chancellor (VC) of BRU Prof Dr Abdul Jalil Miah formally launched the celebrations Monday morning through lighting the `Alok Shikha' on the varsity campus.
Artists of Shikha Nattya Somproday staged drama `Jantu', cultural organisation of the varsity `Ranon' presented cultural function and documentary film `Bangladesher Mukti Sangram' was screened on the first day.
Chaired by VC Prof Dr Abdul Jalil Miah, the inaugural day discussion titled `Let March 25 be International Genocide Day' was attended by Executive President of Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee (GDNC) Shahriar Kabir.
Treasurer of BRU Prof Mozammel Haque, varsity teachers, academicians, educationists, students and professionals addressed the inaugural day discussion moderated by Dr Tuhin Wadud.
Shahriar Kabir demanded for declaring March 25 as International Genocide Day while narrating the true history of the War of Liberation and struggles of the Bangali nation in the process of achieving its Independence.
The second day celebration programmes Tuesday included staging drama on the War of Liberation, streets drama, discussion meeting titled `War of Liberation in 1971: The Greatest Historical Achievement of the Bangalees.'
Chaired by the Vice Chancellor, the discussion was attended by renowned women activist, former Advisor of the Caretaker Government and Executive Director of Ain O Salish Kendra Sultana Kamal as the main discussant.
Vice Chairman of Sector Commanders' Forum Major General (retd) KM Shafiullah Bir Uttam, Lt Colonel Abu Osman Chowdhury, Dr Nazmul Haque, Prof Sarifa Salwa Dina, Shaheen Rezanur, Legal Affairs secretary of GDNC Barrister Dr Turin Afroz will address the daily discussions till March 26.

Our correspondent adds: District administration has taken up an eolaborate programme to celebrate the Independence Day on 26 March in the District here in a befitting manner.
District administration said the three day long programme was planned at a joint meeting of the district administration, leaders of different political parties, head of educational institutions, representatives of different socio-cultural organisation and freedom fighters.
