6 die as freight truck rams into train at container terminal

FE Report | Tuesday, 30 December 2014

At least six people were killed as a freight truck rammed into a train at the Inland Container Terminal of Kamalapur rail-station on Monday afternoon, in a rare collision of such kind.
Police and officials concerned said two of the victims died on the spot and four others succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Over 20 other people were also injured in the fatal accident and 11 of them were admitted into the hospital for treatment in critical condition.
The death toll could climb further as condition of two was 'very critical', according to the physicians at the country's largest public hospital.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Kamalapur Railway Police Station Abdul Mazid said the accident took place at about 1:15pm when a lorry of NS Cargo Services Ltd hit a local train from Narayanganj.
"Two passengers were killed on the spot and more than a dozen severely injured, who were rushed to DMCH for treatment," he said.
Talking to the FE, Transportation Officer of Bangladesh Railway (Dhaka Division) Nazmul Islam said the covered van of NS Cargo Ltd defied signal and crashed into a compartment of the local train that left Narayanganj at about 12:30pm.
"It seems prima facie that the driver of the lorry may have lost control and rammed the train with speed. It would be confirmed after the probe," the train-traffic official said.
Ansar members deployed at the entrance of the ICT said that they had signaled the lorry when the train was entering the station. But it kept on moving forward, avoiding the signal, and hit the train.
A coach of the train tilted sideways under impact of the violent collision.
Three of the deceased were identified as Mojibur Rahman, 50, Alamgir Hossain, 35, and Nayeem, 15.
Identities of the rest had yet to be identified till the filing of the report at 7:00pm.
The injured admitted to the DMCH are Mijanur Rahman, Babul Hossain, Mohammad Nasir, Mostofa Pradhan, Jabed Ali, Billal Hossain, Jindar Molla, Kalam, Milon, Harun-ur-Rashid and another unidentified youth.
DMCH Deputy Director Dr. Md. Musfiqur Rahman said three succumbed to their wounds at the hospital while another one was brought dead.
"The death toll could rise further as condition of few others was very critical…we're trying our best to improve their condition," he added.
Railway Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot soon after the accident. He apologized for the loss of lives in the collision.
"We are sorry. We do not want to witness this type of incidents. It was unwanted, unfortunate and tragic," he told the reporters during the visit.
He said that the government will arrange treatment costs for the injured.
"A three-member committee led by Transportation Officer of Bangladesh Railway (Dhaka Division) Nazmul Islam was formed to investigate the cause behind the accident and it was asked to submit their findings within three working days," he said.
Responding to a question regarding no signal bar to stop such vehicles while a train getting in, he said the ICT area was not a rail crossing.
"We never had any cross bars in this area because it is inside the station," he said.
