6 die in city train-covered van collision

At least six people have died after a train rammed into a covered van near the Kamalapur Railway Station in Shahjahanpur area in the city, police say. Monday afternoon’s accident on the level crossing left 10 others injured, some of them critically. Kamalapur Railway Police Station OC Abdul Majid said the accident took place as the covered van made its way onto the railway tracks defying signal for an incoming train, smashing the iron bar lowerd on the 2 sides of the rail line on the level crossing. Two compartments of the train derailed and the engine was damaged, police and locals said. Witnesses said the speeding van tried to cross the railline defying signal and hit a compartment the Kamalapur-bound passenger train from Narayanganj. The dead could not be identified yet. The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where conditions of some of them were stated to be serious, according to a news agency.
