A court in Kurigram has sentenced six people to life in prison for murder in Phulbari Upazila. Kurigram Additional Sessions Judge Nur Mohammad Shariar Kabir delivered the verdict on Thursday in the ‘Shamsul’ murder case. The court also fined each of the convicts Tk 50,000. They will have to spend an additional year in jail if they fail to pay up. The life-term convicts are Shafiqul Islam Notku, Bokiyotullah, Mojibur Rahman, Nazir Hossain, Badsha Mia and Abdul Hamim. Another convict, Mojibor Rahman, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined Tk 10,000. He has to suffer another three-month jail term if default in paying the fine. Referring to the case statement, public prosecutor at the court, Abraham Lincoln, said Shamsul of Bhangamor village had a row with neighbour Notku over irrigating their agriculture lands. The two were locked in a scuffle on February 10, 2010, he said, adding that Notku and his associates had beaten Shamsul to death. A murder case was filed with the Phulbari Police Station on the day of the incident, according to UNB.
