6 get life term for killing farmer in Netrakona

A Netrakona court on Monday sentenced six people to life term imprisonment for killing a farmer in Durgapur upazila in 2007.
The convicts were Abdus Sattar, Lal Miah, Saiful Islam, Babul Miah, Suruj Miah and Habibur Rahman of Telipara village in Durgapur upazila, a news agency report said.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer two years more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, some assailants attacked farmer Khokon Miah and hit him with a homemade weapon when he was cultivating his land in the village on August 7, 2007, leaving him critically injured.
Khokon succumbed to his injuries at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Later, the victim’s paternal uncle Abdul Jalil filed a case against nine people with Durgapur Police Station.
After examining the witnesses and documents, Judge of additional district and session judge’s court M Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict acquitting three people.
