6 JMB men get life term in Sherpur

SHERPUR, Sept 3 (UNB): A court here Thursday convicted six members of Jam'atul Mujahidin Bangladesh (JMB) and awarded them life term imprisonment for bomb attack in the district headquarters as part of countrywide serial bombings on August 17, 2005.
The lifers are, Salah Uddin Alias Saleh (40), JMB divisional commander (north zone), Mojahidul Islam alias Sumon (38), district commander, Sumon's elder brother Nazmul alias Ruman (41), Rafiqul Islam, Mannan alias Taru and Mostafizur Rahman alias Nixon alias Jahed. The last three were tried in absentia.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 25,000 each, in default, to suffer one year RI more.
According to the prosecution, the JMB members exploded six bombs in five important points of the town including District Judge Court, DC Office and New Market area on the day.
Later, a case was filed against 17 people with the Sadar police station in this connection. After the investigation, police submitted charge-sheet against nine people, including two executed JMB kingpins Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai in 2008.
After examining the records and 76 witnesses, District and Sessions Judge and Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal M Morshed Alam handed down the verdict acquitting another one.
