6 killed, 18 hurt in Gazipur road crashes

Two more people succumbed to their injuries, raising the number of fatalities to six in two separate incidents of trucks ramming ‘Leguna’ in Gazipur on Tuesday. A truck rammed a Leguna (a 4-wheel human hauler) killing five Leguna passengers at Chandra at Kaliakoir Upazila in the morning. At least 10 other Leguna passengers were injured. The accident took place in front of Chandra Forest Office on Dhaka-Tangail Highway around 7am. The Leguna was heading for Konabari from Chandra when a truck, going the other way, rammed into it, OC Alamgir Siddiqui of Konabari Solna Highway Police, said quoting witnesses. He said Khadiza Akhter, 23, died on the spot. She hailed from Bogra district. Abdul Khalek, 40 from Natore, Abdul Hakim, 45, of Gopalpur, Abdus Sobhan, 30, from Sirajganj district and an unidentified man succumbed to their injuries at Kaliakoir Health Complex. At least five more are admitted there with serious injuries. Another Leguna passenger was killed at Shilmun at Tongi in Gazipur when the vehicle was hit by a truck around 6am, said Tongi Police SI Md Helal Uddin. Bedena Akhter, 42, from Netrokona district, died and eight other passengers were injured. Among them two critically injured – Abdul Barek, 35, of Tongi and ‘Mamun’ from Shilmun – were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to a news agency.
