6 to die for Shamsul murder in 2006

A speedy trial tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced 6 people to death for killing Rajarbagh Police Lines telecom department official Golam Shamsul Haider 8 years ago. Those sentenced on Tuesday include three of Haider’s colleagues. They are the telecom department’s office assistant Mohammad Hafizul Hossain, accountant Mohammad Abdul Latif and Superintendent Anwar Hossain Sarker. The others are Babul alias Tapan Chakrabarty, Mohammad Wasim, and Mohammad Kajal Mia. Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal (ICT)-1 Judge Shahed Nuruddin sentenced two other accused to life term in prison. They are Shamsul Alam and Rajan Mia. They were also fined Tk 100,000 each. They will have to serve a year’s rigorous imprisonment if they failed to pay the fines, special public prosecutor of the case Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan said. Of the accused, Hafizul, Latif, Babul and Rajan are absconding. Another accused, Rana Mia, died during the investigation. Shamsul Haider was chopped to death on the street in front of the AGB Colony in Motijheel on September 6, 2006. His elder brother Abul Kamal Azad filed a murder case with the Motijheel police, according to bdnews24.com.
