600 poor women get Tk 4.2m business support in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, May 12 (BSS): Financial support towards distressed women for their small-business purposes could be the effective means of freeing the urban poor and extreme poor communities from the vicious cycle of poverty and hunger.
Mayor of Rajshahi AHM Khairuzzaman Liton stated this while disbursing bank cheques of block grant worth about Taka 4.2 million among 600 poor and extreme poor women as the chief guest.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) under its 'Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction Project (UPPRP)' hosted the grant disbursing ceremony at Naodapara here Saturday.
Mayor Liton urged upon the cheque-recipients to put in their level best efforts for successful promotion of their small business after the best uses of the grants for elevating their living and livelihood condition.
He said the present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for bringing the poor and marginalized people under a social safety net.
Mayor Liton told the gathering that around Taka 3.55 crore will be disbursed among 5,750 underprivileged women as grant for improving their small business by the forthcoming June for their self-reliance.
In his address of welcome, UPPRP Town Manager Golam Mostofa said the project is being implemented aimed at improving the living and livelihood condition of around three lakh poor and extreme poor people, especially women and girls, in the Rajshahi city by 2015.
UNDP in association with UKaid and UNHabitat extends financial and technical support to the project.
Under socio-economic fund, he said Taka 1.46 crore were disbursed among 3088 dropout school children for restarting their institutional education earlier and disbursing process of Taka 1.36 crore among 4000 children is being progressed at present.
The programme promotes household and community level UFP technology demonstrations, provides small input supports especially high yielding variety vegetable and fruits seeds, saplings, ducklings, chick and integrated fish farming in community ponds, mushroom and honey production, poultry vaccination.
It has also provides business start-up grants to extreme poor women for poultry, goat rearing, beef fattening & agri- business etc.
Various other settlement improvement facilities like 8,484 pit latrines, one community latrine, 1403 tubewells, 42,412 squire-kilometer footpath, 6,708 meter drain, 34 dustbins and seven community centers were developed for ensuring improved water and sanitation among the poverty-prone communities.
