FE REPORT | Tuesday, 23 July 2024

Police have arrested a total of 616 people so far in more than 30 cases filed with different police stations in the capital in connection with the violence during the student movement over job quota reinstatement in government service.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman said this while addressing a media briefing on Monday.
Meanwhile, several hundred detainees were sent to jail after they were produced in courts in Dhaka, said some eyewitness lawyers.
Among the accused, BNP chairperson's Adviser Jahir Uddin Swapon and party's International Affairs Secretary Nasir Uddin Ahmed Ashim have been sent on five-day police remand in a case filed with Banani police station.
A Dhaka court passed the order granting a petition filed by the police, said Advocate Taherul Islam Tawhid who appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the accused.
The court also sent Dr Samiul, a pro-Jamaat leader, on five-day remand in the case.
However, the court rejected the remand prayer for BNP chairperson's Advisor Aman Ullah Aman. He was sent to jail with division facilities in the case.
The case was filed on charge of torching the Setu Bhaban (office of the Bridges Division), preventing police from discharging duties and others.
Earlier on Sunday, police arrested BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, publicity secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, central committee member Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Dhaka city north member-secretary Aminul Islam, Gono Odhikar Parishad convener Nurul Hoque Nuru and others.
A Dhaka court sent Amir Khasru and Nipun Roy on three-day remand in a case and Salahuddin Tuku, Aminul Islam and Nuru on five-day remand.
