62 drown in boat sinking off Yemen: UN

At least 62 people bound for Middle East and Europe drowned as the boat carrying them, capsized in rough waters in an area between Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, the United Nations has said. UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said at a news briefing on Friday in Geneva that those drowned in the boat capsize in the treacherous waters off Yemen’s coast last weekend, were African 60 migrants and two Yemeni crew. They perished in the treacherous waters between Gulf of Aden and Red Sea last weekend, he said. The accident that has just come to light is believed to be the deadliest there this year, the UNHCR spokesperson told the reporters. ‘We are still seeking information, but it is now confirmed that the boat carrying 60 people from Somalia and Ethiopia and two Yemeni crew sank in the Red Sea last week,’ Edwards told during the media briefing. Local residents buried their bodies which washed ashore near the Bab El Mandeb area off Yemen’s coast, he informed, according to a news agency.
