65pc work of project to solve Ctg's waterlogging completed

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 08: Over 65 per cent work of a mega project mainly aiming to rid the port city of water-logging problem has been completed, sources said.
The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in association with Bangladesh Army is implementing the Tk 60 billion (Tk 6,000 crore) project.
"We have completed 65 per cent work of the project. There are a total of 36 canals under the project. Of the 36 canals, we have complete work on seven canals and work on 11 canals will be completed within June next, said Lieutenant Colonel Shahe Ali, Project Director (PD) of the mega scheme to recover illegally occupied canals and end the water-logging crisis, a perennial problem in the port city.
He said after completing acquiring all lands required to complete the project, work on all the 36 canals will be completed.
He also said that work to construct the retaining walls of the canals and other construction works are continuing in full swing now. "We can hand over the canals within June next," he added.
The 7 canals, recovered from illegal occupation and renovation works done are Rajakhali 3 Canal, Sadarghat-1 and -2 canals, Kolabagicha Canal, Morium Bibi Canal, Gupta Canal and Ajob Bahar Canal, said the project director.
On the other hand, works continuing on 11 other canals and a few of them nearing completion, he said. The canals are- Chandgaon Shomsher Para Tripura Canal, Ruby Cement Canal, Noyahat Canal, Firinghi Bazar Canal, Mogholtuli Canal, Rampur Canal, Nasir Canal, Tekpara Canal, Bakolia Canal, Rajakhali 1 and 2 canals.
Contacted, CDA Chairman Zahirul Alam Duvash said, the Engineering Core of Bangladesh Army started the work of the mega project of the CDA on April 24, 2018.
Once completed, people of Chattogram will get benefit of the project aiming to solve the city's water-logging crisis, he added.
Sources said, the CDA in association with Bangladesh Army has evicted a total of 1,586 illegal establishments from 21 canals so far.
