69th UNGA an opportunity for BD to uphold successes: FM

Bangladesh has described the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as an opportunity for the present government to uphold its 'multifaceted successes' at the global forum, report agencies
"I think an opportunity will be created to let the world know Bangladesh's multifaceted successes achieved in national and international arenas through high-level participation in the UNGA this time," Foreign Minister (FM) AH Mahmood Ali told a press conference on Wednesday.
The minister said this is the first UNGA after Awami League government assumed power on January 12 following the January-5 election. "Considering this, the high-level participation led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will strengthen Bangladesh's image in global arena."
Mr Ali said migrant workers rights, climate vulnerability issues are to feature PM's speech alongside the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the focus of the 69th UNGA.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque, Secretary (Bilateral, Training & Consular) Mustafa Kamal, Director General (UN) Saida Muna Tasneem and DG (EP) Noor-E Helal Saifur Rahman were also present at the press conference.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to leave for New York on Sunday night and will stay there until September 28 to participate in various high-level sessions.
The minister said the PM is expected to deliver her speech in the UNGA on September 27. "As usual, she'll deliver it in Bangla."
Hasina will highlight international peace and security, establishment of democracy and good governance, leading role of Bangladesh in women empowerment, rights of migrant workers, steps taken by the present government to remove poverty and face climate change challenges, issues related to the least developed countries, progress on millennium development goals (MDGs) in her speech, Mahmood Ali said.
The PM will also highlight Bangladesh's position on the theme of the general debate of the 69th UNGA - 'Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda' in her speech.
The United States will host a high-level Peacekeeping Summit on
September 26 and Hasina has been invited to co-chair the summit for her personal commitment to global peace and development and Bangladesh's stronger role in UN peacekeeping missions.
