7 examinees detained for adopting unfair means

Dhaka University (DU) authorities detained at least seven examinees Friday on allegation of adopting unfair means during the Ga Unit admission test held on the day, sources said.
The detained examinees are: Sanjana Binte Basir from Borhanuddin College centre, Faisal Kabir from Begum Badrunnesa Govt Girls' College centre, Ahadur Rahman from Azimpur Agrani School and College centre, Ariful Islam from Dhanmondi Ideal College centre, Nurul Afsar from Teachers' Training College centre and Mehdi Hasan and Ershad Haque from Home Economics College centre.
DU Proctor Prof Amjad Ali told journalists that during the hour-long written test, these students were trying to answer questions using mobile phones which was prohibited.
"Our vigilance team caught them red-handed, when they were trying to give answers provided by outsiders", he said adding that they were handed over to the related police stations following necessary grilling.
The DU proctor said actually a gang supplied answers of the question through mobile phone and these students were trying to use the same.
Denying leakage of any question paper before the examination, convener of the Ga Unit examination Prof Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam said someone might have taken the question paper out after the test had begun.
The convener also expressed satisfaction over the arrangement of the examination saying that their team was very active to thwart any illegal efforts of the dishonest people.
According the DU admission office, a total of 48,976 eligible admission seekers sat against 1,120 seats to get admission under the Faculty of Business Studies of the university.
This year, a total of 301,038 students have applied against available 6,582 seats to get admission at the country's largest public university.
Of them 81,948 students applied under the Ka Unit against 1,640 seats, 42,417 students under the Kha Unit for 2,221seats, 112,042 students under Gha Unit against 1,416 seats, 14,755 students under the Cha Unit against 135 seats.
