Seven female chiefs of foreign missions and UN agencies have been serving now in Bangladesh. This is for the first time that so many women foreign diplomats are working at a time in the country.
Ambassador/high commissioners are from Brazil, Denmark, Sweden, Canada and Norway while two country representatives belong to the United Nation's agencies.
A few months before, seven female were working as the heads of foreign missions which, however, came down to five after the Malaysian high commissioner returned home ending her tenure. The lady charge de affairs of Switzerland Embassy was replaced by a male ambassador who took over charge at the end of February last.
The women diplomats now serving here are Hanne Fugl Eskjær, Ambassador of Denmark, Wanja Campos da Nobrega, Ambassador of Brazil, Heather Cruden, High Commissioner of Canada, Merete Lundemo, Ambassador of Norway and Anneli Lindahl Kenny, Ambassador of Sweden.
Argentina Matavel Piccin and Christine Hunter are the country representatives of UNFPA and UN Women respectively.
"It is a fantastic experience serving in Bangladesh as the High Commissioner of Canada. I find people of Bangladesh fantastic and the country has huge potential," Canadian High Commissioner told the FE.
In an exclusive interview with the FE recently, she also said it is also a great feeling to have a good number of female diplomats heading missions in Bangladesh.
Among the female ambassadors now in Dhaka, Norwegian Ambassador Merete Lundemo took over charge in November and Denmark Ambassador Hanne Fugl Eskjær in September last.
Meanwhile, all the women diplomats have taken initiatives to celebrate the International Women's Day together as part of a week-long programme to highlight social, political and economic achievements of women internationally while focusing on areas requiring further actions.
They will talk to media on March 6.
