7 fugitive convicts surrender

JHALAKATHI, Mar 11 (UNB): Seven convicts who were sentenced to five years imprisonment in absentia in extortion case seven years ago, were sent to jail hajat when they had surrendered before a court here Thursday.
The convicts were identified as Nasir Uddin Mridha, his wife Renu Begum, Jakir Hossain, Somir alias Shahidul Islam, M Alauddin, Bachchu Hawlader and Khalilur Rahman, all of whom hailed from Kolabagan area of Jhalakati municipality.
Police said Anwara Begum, neighbour of Nasir Uddin Mridha, filed an extortion case on June 24, 2001 against the accused.
Later, after examining the records and witnesses the then Judge Nijamul Haque of district joint judge court-2 convicted and sentenced them to five years imprisonment each on June 21, 2004.
The court also fined them Tk 2,000, in default, to suffer 2 months RI more.
All the convicts remained absconding since the pronouncement of the verdict.
