Dozens of students of Jagannath University (JnU) staged a demonstration on the campus Tuesday demanding cancellation of the decision of the university authorities to impose development fees on first year undergraduate students.
They also threatened a violent protest unless the decision is withdrawn.
Police and witnesses said more than 200 students of left-leaning student wings under the banner of Progotishil Chhatra Jote started the demonstration at about 11:45am.
The protesters later took out a procession on the street disrupting vehicular movement for about 30 minutes.
The management of the public university recently imposed the fee amounting to Tk 5000, asking the newcomers to pay the amount before taking admission.
The protest programme turned into a violent one soon after the activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, swooped on the protesters.
At least seven people were injured in the attack.
The injured persons were taken to nearby clinics where they were given fist aid.
The agitating students argued that the university authorities should not collect the fees from the freshers as the university became a public institution five years ago. "The illogical charge should not be accepted at all and we'll resist the anti-student move anyhow," a protester said.
A sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station said normalcy has returned to the JnU after intervention of the law enforcers.
However, vice-chancellor of the university Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmed rejected the demand, saying that the students have to pay the fee for the sake of continuation of various development activities.
