NETRAKONA, Dec 4 (BSS): A unique glorious episode was added to the history of war by seven valiant freedom fighters on July 26, 1971 accelerating the pace of freeing the country from the Pakistani occupation forces.
Nazirpur Bazaar, a riverine bordering area of Kalmakanda Upazila of Netrakona, was the place which witnessed the superb chapter where the seven fighters demonstrated a rare instance of "front battle" against the Pakistani Army through sacrificing their lives.
The martyred freedom fighters were Dizendra, Bhabatush, Nuruzzaman, Year Mahmud, Fazlul Haque, Dr Abdul Aziz and Mohammad Jamaluddin, according to the history of the Liberation War and Netrakona Muktijoddha Sangsad.
People from all walks of life of Netrakona observe the day as "Historic Nazirpur Day" every year to pay respect to the seven martyred freedom fighters for their outstanding contribution.
During the liberation war, a group of 17 freedom fighters including the seven came to know a platoon of Pakistani army was going to Kalmakanda upazila headquarters passing by the Nazirpur bazaar.
The freedom fighters led by Nazmul Haque Tara took preparations to sacrifice their lives to free the motherland and got prepared for face to face fighting with Pakistani Army who were equipped with modern arms.
On the day at about 11:30am, the freedom fighters saw the Pakistani soldiers proceed towards the bazaar areas boarding on several large size boats.
Suddenly, the freedom fighters started firing on Pak-army by their light machine guns, killing some soldiers on the boats.
The unprepared Pakistani troops started to retaliate against the freedom fighters. They got down from the boats and stormed into the Nazirpur bazaar areas with indiscriminate firing. After a while, the occupation forces encircled the freedom fighters group. But the freedom fighter without losing mental strength continued fighting them chanting "Joy Bangla" slogan.
The freedom fighters virtually made themselves a "suicide squad" and swooped on the opponents with spraying bullets towards them. During the fight, the seven freedom fighters embraced martyrdom and their commander Nazmul Haque Tara received bullet injury.
In the front line battle, 19 Pak-soldiers were shot dead while seven Razakers were critically injured.
The Pakistani troops fled the scene with the help of Razakars and Al-Badars leaving behind the bodies of their colleagues under backing up by two helicopters of Pakistani Air Force.
Meanwhile, the rest of the freedom fighters hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at Nazirpur bazaar.
Talking to the BSS, freedom fighter Abdur Rahim, who was accompanied by the seven freedom fighters, said the killing of Pakistani troops in Nazirpur by the freedom fighters had broken the moral strength of those stationed in the district.
